Violet Lucy DuBois

December 24, 1932 - February 21, 2019

Violet DuBois, age 86, of Dunseith, ND joined Jesus into eternity on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at her daughter’s home.

Violet Lucy DuBois was born on December 24, 1932 to Edward “Jack” and Ernestine (Malaterre) Davis in Belcourt, ND. She was raised in Belcourt. She attended Roussin School, Marty Catholic School in South Dakota, and later earned her High School Equivalency, GED. Violet was united in marriage to Emil “Eugene” DuBois on October 13, 1953 at Seven Dollars Catholic Church in Fort Totten, ND. Together they raised twelve children, Darrell, Beverly, Donna, Linda, Emil Jr., Sandi, Clifford Gayle, Janice, Lonnie, Shelly, Michael, and granddaughter, Aprill.

Violet worked for many years at San Haven Sanitarium in Dunseith and until its closing in 1987. She then began to work for Senior Meals as head cook and operations manager until her retirement. Violet loved to relay to family and friends the adventures of growing up in the Turtle Mountains (Tonkayash). She was one of the last fluent speakers of Chippewa-Cree language and enjoyed every opportunity in engaging in conversation with other speakers and giving lessons to all her children and grandchildren. She was always amused at the many mispronunciations as she gently taught.

Violet loved her family dearly and enjoyed every family get together. She was a fabulous cook and was the go-to expert on many Turtle Mountain traditional foods. She liked to go rummaging and visiting second hand stores to see what she could “find” for family and friends. Violet was a devout Catholic and said the rosary daily. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed as she was a “forever treasure.”

Violet is survived by her children, Darrell (Tammy), Beverly Gooden, Donna Thomas, Linda (Jiggers LaFromboise), all of Dunseith, Emil Jr. (David Mann) of Wimberley, TX, Sandi LaRocque, and Clifford, both of Dunseith, Gayle (Ray Grandbois) Peltier of Aberdeen, SD, Janice (Jesse Delorme) DuBois-Delorme, and Shelly DuBois-Peltier, both of Belcourt; 35 grandchildren; 80 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren; and sister, Gloria Lunday of Belcourt.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband (Emil “Gene”), her sons, Lonnie and Michael, her parents, grandson, Cameron Gooden, granddaughter, Cinnamon Gooden, great grandchild, Ace Peltier, her brothers, Francis, Clifford, and Christopher Davis, and her sisters, Angeline Allery and Lillian Griffith.

Active Pallbearers are grandsons, Eddie Peltier, Jared DuBois, Justin DuBois, Tyson Peltier, Cole LaRocque, Noah Peltier, and Jordan DuBois. Eucharistic Ministers are John “Jack” and Gloria Lunday. Honorary Pallbearers are grandsons, Brian, Clifton, River, Calvin, Baby Darrell, J. Michael, Caleb, Anthony and Ian, and granddaughters, Aprill, Ajanee, Candida, Cessalie, Stacy, Tia, Shanae, Angel, Sommer, Jade, Neysa, Kyla, Sheanoa, Amy, Kesha, and Janae.  Rosary led by Alvin and Ella McLeod.
